In the midst of the Pacific Ocean lies French Polynesia, which comprises 118 islands and atolls that shimmer across the sea like a string of prized Tahitian pearls. These tiny specks of land have inspired generations of artists and writers trying to capture the beauty and allure of the lush rainforests, crystalline clear lagoons and palm-fringed beaches. The Society Islands are believed to have been named by Captain James Cook during his first voyage in 1769 to honour the Royal Society, the sponsor of the first British scientific survey of the islands, but according to his journal, Captain Cook called the islands Society “as they lay contiguous to one another". However named, these islands are rightfully world-renowned for their unmatched beauty.
